Instructor Education & Personal Performance Days For 2012

All instructor education and personal performance days for the foreseeable future have had to be abandoned due to an accident to the senior instructor in December of last year. The accident—the severing of all four quads from the bones in his left leg will keep him away from fencing for quite some time. He had an emergency operation within 24 hours despite the long theatre list. All four quads were re-attached with best quality fisherman's stitching and the skin reattached held together with best quality Home Base staples. After six weeks in a two part cast joined by a metal bar making it heavier than a standard leg cast has been replaced by a pivoted brace for the next 2 months.

Coach education and personal performance day’s

Coach education and personal performance day’s started in the autumn of 1999. The format was very simple. I had over the years spent a good deal of the time at coaching courses acting as stooge and student, therefore loosing valuable work time. My aim was to reduce the time spent having to act the part of a student, giving potential coaches and coaches under training a chance to spend if not the whole, certainly the majority of the time teaching and coaching. As it was to prove over the next two years the workload on trainee coaches was increased by the additional

requirement of preparing written lesson and

session plans.

The answer was to provide them with

students. Ranging from beginners to

competent fencers. The Sallé JEUDI

club together with my other students

within the group could provide these

both at senior and junior levels.

It also enabled my pupils to work with

other fencers and coaches who for the

most part were extremely able fencers

in their own right.

The trainee coaches and instructors

have been able to work with set groups, each at different standards and ages. Both group and individual lessons were covered during the day. Valuable lessons were learnt in these early days, however the basic format has not changed in the ten years. The main strength is in the quantity and quality of the fencers attending the personal performance section of these training days. Without these the format could not work.

A few words on the personal performance aspect of the sessions. The CE&PP days have never been totally orientated towards the coaching aspect. It was always intended that the fencing students would be achieving as much if not more out of the day. The secret is to balance the groups, obtaining a variety of both work and work loading.

Senior and to a small extent some junior fencers have both the motivation, dedication, and skills that enables it possible increase the work load on both fencers and coaches. Juniors and beginners need shorter timetables with a lighter work loading, They also need a much higher concentrated instructional attention. A valuable lesson. This intern helps the coaching student rotation, both for group and individual lessons.

The introduction in 2001 of the fencer’s ‘Target and evaluation.’ sheets was

Received by both sections as a very useful addition. At the beginning of the day fencers would be asked to evaluate certain aspects of their skills. My strengths, my weaknesses, what I want to get out of the day. Then plan what is the beginning or format of a training diary. At the same time the coaching students where being given a briefing of the days format by the coach educator. Which for new coaching students was indispensable.

In summing up. The CE&PP days as a training joint venture have been both successful and enjoyable for all participants. No student has ever left not learning something; most have got more out of their day with us than they ever expected. Never have we had any bad comments, plenty of praise yes. It is I am sure a winning formula for trainee coaches, coaches, coach educators and above all fencers of all standards. Hard work for the organiser, but what isn’t if you wish to succeed. Sallé JEUDI’s motto ‘Train hard Fight easy.’ may have been borrowed. Those from whom it has been borrowed would I  am sure endorse our objectives.

Most Salle JEUDI Group courses start in September, January

and April in line with the academic school terms. The Group

offer a 6 week introductory course for around £30.00 which

includes loan of fencing equipment. However with the

training system the group uses you can start at any time

during the term. The full time 6/7 week club/course fees

are around £45.00 or £50.00 which includes loan of

fencing equipment. Which again you can start at any

Time during the term.
